Popular Cancer Blogger and Commentator Dies
National Public Radio commentator and cancer blogger Leroy Sievers passed away on Friday in Maryland.
Sievers, who was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2001, turned his personal battle with the cancer into a very popular radio and online report. After his original diagnosis of colon cancer in 2001, he was also diagnosed with a brain tumor and lung cancer.
In a statement by NPR’s Vice President for News Ellen Weiss, she stated “For the past two years, Leroy shared his life with cancer on the air and online with passion, with a kind, brutal honesty that created a safe space for an open and candid dialogue about the disease”.
Sievers reported on his chemo treatments back in February of 2006 which was broadcasted on Morning Edition. The overwhelming response from this report helped his story to become a regular feature online on NPR’s website. For more than 25 years Sievers was also a journalist who worked for such networks like CBS and ABC.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been released.
